A Bloom of Bike Hubs

And not the kind your wheel spins on, either….

In a seemingly sudden development, the number of bike hubs in the LA area more than tripled recently with the opening of facilities providing long- and short-term bike parking, rentals, and sometimes showers appearing in Santa Monica and Burbank.

Yesterday saw the official grand opening of Santa Monica’s Bike Center, whose two locations will serve commuters, shoppers, and recreational riders who need to stop in the sity’s downtown commercial district. It will be operated by a private partnership that includes longtime local bike advocate Ron Durgin and businessman Richard Bloom, who owns the “Perry’s on the Beach” bikepath eateries.

Meanwhile, a week ago Burbank opened a less-ambitious Bike Stop at its Metrolink station. This will be an unattended facility, but will require cyclists to sign up before receiving access codes; it will provide secure bike parking plus a modest repair station for emergency fix-it-ups.

These join Long Beach’s venerable Bikestation, which now has branches in Claremont, Covina, and several other California towns outside of the county, as well as Washington DC. Bikestation LBC recently hosted its own reopening party to celebrate a new, larger building. You’ll find it at the Transit Mall, right by a Blue Line stop.

Looks like the dream of safe downtown bike parking for everyday commuters and “last-mile” integration with regional transit is slowly coming true even in the most car-afflicted cities in the US–those in our own Los Angeles County!

  1. Could we quit calling Long Beach “the LBC?” What does the “C” stand for anyway? Compton? Crips?

We’re proud that downtown Long Beach has grown so far beyond the ‘hood it used to be. Please quit dragging it back down.

  2. Long Beach City. It’s just a nickname that comes from hip hop, and it’s stuck. And as someone from Long Beach, I don’t see that as a bad thing.
