The Power of Nagging

Well, Garcetti’s office is still stonewallng us on the Hel-Mel bike corral, but at least I managed to get some bike parking put in at what may at first seem a somewhat unlikely spot–the corner of Culver and Vista del Mar in Playa del Rey, a little scatter of stores and eateries wedged between the Ballona Wetlands and the beach.

And it also happens to be just yards from the Braude bike path that runs from Malibu to Palos Verdes, and less than half a mile from the Ballona Creek bike path. So while it’s just a few restaurants, bars, and coffeeshops, markets and motels, and assorted small offices, it gets lots and lots of bike traffic. Yet it doesn’t even have parking meters lock a bike to. (And we all do that, illegal though it be in LA.)

So first I suggested to LADOT, then I reminded, then I reminded again, and finally I nagged. I got a little insistent when I saw that the stenciled paint marks indicating the locations of the future racks had faded away almost entirely, at which point I just nagged by phone instead of email.

And day before yesterday I pedaled by and saw the nice, shiny bike racks–six of them, serving Tanner’s Coffee, the wonderful Bistro du Soleil, Cantalini’s “Salerno Beach” restaurant, Gordon’s Market, and the little strip mall housing Café Milan, Mo’s, and a few other establishments of diverse character. (There’s also the Harbor Room and the Shack, both old-school local hangs within walking distance of a handy rack.)

Since LADOT interviews merchants before installing bike racks in front o ftheir doors, and some merchants do refuse, all these establishments now count as bike-friendly businesses, if only passively. They didn’t say no, and these unenlightened days that counts for something.

Here’s a little photo-montage of the new racks–a testament to the power of nagging!

  1. I had no idea businesses were interviewed before the installation of bike racks– so not only do businesses have power to shut down bike lanes but they have power to reject bike racks on public sidewalks too?! That just doesn’t seem right

  2. I think it’s absurd. The sidewalks are public, and cyclists want to park there generally to patronize businesses. But I recommend lots of rack locations to LADOT, and every once in a while they inform me of a rejection. Paper or Plastik, a coffeehouse on Pico in Mid-City, just refused a bike rack, which makes me less interested in going there. Might talk with the owner, though.

    No, it’s not right.

  3. I would also like to add that my requests for bike racks in Eagle Rock have been filled very quickly– much to my surprise!

  4. very encouraging – here in Newport Beach we have a long list of bike racks needed, but no progress by the City. Your approach might work here.

  6. UPDATE: I spoke with Anya, the owner of Paper or Plastik, and she is now happy to welcome a bike rack. Her concerns were minor, so perhaps the LADOT employee who spoke to her simply wasn’t thorough enough in inquiring after her worries. I’ll post here when (if) the rack actually goes in.

Christian Burr used to work with us here at Orange 20. Now he lives in Chile where he’s from originally. He sent us a video of him shredding the Andes.
