Not What We Expected….

New Bike Lanes on LA's 7th StreetWhat a surprise it was to hear the LADOT had for once belied its reputation for sluggishness and put some paint down not on time–no, not at all: but ahead of schedule!

Yes, the 7th Street road diet has begun, and a month early! Four lanes will become three–for cars. Instead of two lanes in each direction with left turn lanes only at the very ends of the long blocks, there will be one lane in each direction, with a permanent left turn lane running the full length of the treatment. This means that left-turning cars will no longer block the fast lane regularly and cause backups and dangerous swerves. In other cities, raod diets have either not slowed drivers down more than a few seconds per mile,or have actually sped up throughput of motor traffic slightly.

And the four-to-three reduction in car lanes leaves plenty of road space left over for…bike lanes! Nice, fat bike lanes. Take a close look at the photo: there’s a car door open in the distance…and it barely edges into the bike lane at all.

Much better than the ancient lanes on the eastern part of Sunset Boulevard, or indeed in almost any other part of the city.

LADOT, Planning, and LACBC cooperated in reaching out to merchants and residents of the corridor, explaining what was planned, showing them it wouldn’t incovenience them if they drove, and of course pleasing the numerous denizens of 7th who already bicycle its length to work or shop.

The first part of the job will reach from Catalina almost to downtown, and when I rode the street last Thursday it was about one-third done. Another third had already been stripped of the old stripes and may already be finished by now.

It was a very comfortable ride. I use 7th frequently, living in the Miracle Mile as I do and often having business downtown. Many of my friends use it too. It has less traffic and lower hills than most alternatives, and in my case it takes me very close to my three most frequent stops. So it’s most gratifying to have it thus improved. An almost luxurious ride!

Now, let’s hope that this is the beginning of a trend….

  1. This is awesome news! Little by little we here in Los Angeles are catching up with the rest of the world in regards to bicycles. The biggest challenge is just getting more people on two wheels; I can’t wait until we look like Copenhagen! One step at a time… pedal push at a time?
