Since most of this sort of racing (foot or bike) is strictly amateur, maybe it should, like so many other activities, be more strictly local (and so sustainable) as well. Joggers don't call walking to the store "junk miles". Pedestrians don't blame joggers for driving, instead of walking, to a marathon 2 towns away. The same can apply here.
