Big Red

Josh Hayes made a Impromptu visit to LA because of two bikes, both pictured above.
Since he was in the area, he visited Orange 20. He said that it’s been a while
since he has visited the store. They have sinced moved from the tiny shack to
the corner building facing Melrose. Much has changed since Josh moved away from
SB. I hope Orange 20 made you feel welcome.

It was a pleasure to meet you Josh.

“Forget it, Jake”

So I was cruising downtown today, looking for bike parking. Not–at least not originally–to report on it, but because I start jury duty tomorrow, and the courthouse’s parking is under reconstruction, and the parking structure they’re sending jurors to, the one belonging to Disney Hall, doesn’t have a single bike rack. I know…the attendant on duty had no idea, but he let me cruise the levels. Nothing…. Doubly annoying since I love classical music as much as I love riding my bike.

Around the courthouse itself are only a few lonely and rather crusty DOT racks right by the curb, in full view of any bike thieves in the area. Not good for an eight-hour stay.

Fortunately I have an acquaintance who works in a nearby building that does have a well-protected and modern rack, so I’ll try to sneak in there.

But there ought to be some effing bike parking in the administrative and financial heart of our city! After all, how many people would drive anywhere if there were only three or four car spaces for every square block?

Via Cafe, with my bike in visible in the windowAfter my fruitless search I was hungry so I went to Chinatwon, and again, no place to park. Not on the sidewalks, even where they are triple-width, and not in the Central Plaza. I locked my bike to itself in a nook by the window to Via Café, but I felt that I had to keep an eye on it all the time.

I know…”Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown.”

But Chinatown…I see cyclists pass by the dozens whenever I’m there. I start and end my “Stitching the River” rides there. My riding buds and I stop there often to eat…but only where we can watch the bikes. It’s got a growing nightlife scene that would attract lots of cyclists to spend time (and money) there…if they could feel safe leaving their bikes. And the car parking is limited and inconvenient. It’s made for bike access.

And that gives us a hook….

So, let’s nag LADOT…and not just them but the Chinatown Business Improvement District as well. Let’s get some racks in the Central Plaza, eight or ten of them at least. and some sidewalk racks too where the sidewalks are wide enough. Here are some emails or links:

As you are no doubt aware, you can park twelve bikes in a space that holds only one car. It just doesn’t make sense to neglect bike parking in a city throttled by traffic jams and struggling to stay in business.

Let them know that if they’ll build it, you will park. And spend. Because, forget the environment and community, they won’t listen to you about that, but they will clearly hear the sound of dollar bills unfolding.

Surly Long Haul Caddy

This has to be one of the most “Gangster” bikes we have built for a customer. When this customer came in, he knew exactly what he wanted, “I want a surly Long Haul Trucker, 26″, black. And i want it to be the Cadillac of Long Haul Truckers.” At first i was skeptical about how this size 62 would look with the wheel size but as soon as it was built up my skepticism went out the door. This is the end result and he nailed it. He hand picked all the parts him self and had Cache build up this beast. The build definitely speaks for its self.
