The winner of the Bruiser frame and fork is Jannette Bloom in LA!! Having grown up with riding BMX with guys, she had to sell her old bike to raise fund to move to LA. The sorry $20 bike in front of Orange 20 is her current beater, so in order to be the envy of all the fellas she rides with and so she doesnt get the mickey taken out of her anymore, we will ship the prize off to her!

Fourth Street Serenade

Pothole at Hudson & 4th, LA
Six inches deep, jagged, and wet–and in the middle of the lane!

A lot of folks compare riding a bicycle to music. If that’s the case, then LA’s 4th Street needs a change of key : though it runs in part through one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in LA, and the section from Hoover to Cochran is a designated bike route as well, its road surface is in horrible shape, and has been for the fifteen or twenty years that I’ve been riding it nearly every day.

Which is why LACBC is pushing to have DOT make it our city’s first bicycle boulevard.

LACBC has been meeting with community councils, local businesses, neighborhood newspapers, the DOT, and various council members to try to get this done–because 4th should be the first (but not the last) bike boulevard in LA, for a number of very good reasons….

Most hours of the day there are more cyclists than motorists using the road; it connects dozens of varied neighborhoods and commercial areas (it’s part of my own route to Hel-Mel & the 20); and DOT actively recommends it to cyclists. Yet they haven’t even repaved it in the last couple of decades.

And in case you haven’t heard yet: a bicycle boulevard is simply a street optimized for cycling, with smooth pavements, signs, and–best of all–through car traffic diverted by roundabouts and other structures (often landscaped) that deter non-local driving but let bikes sail through unimpeded. They’ve been built in a number of cities, including several in California. Now it’s our turn!

Think it’s a good idea? Join the LACBC in its 4th Street Bicycle Boulevard Project!

  1. it’s all for publicity and image, nothing being done. the intersections with major streets like Highland or Rossmore don’t even have a painted crosswalk to slow down car traffic, 4th is a very dangerous street to ride a bike for alot of different reasons, welcome to LA.

Whoo College!

Read the article from the LA Times…HERE!

Samuel Starr rides his bike around the 132-foot ring of the velodrome he designed and built inside a Pomona College library. The project tested his talents in computer design, carpentry and conceptual art.
