Cyclists’ Rights, Cyclists’ Responsibilities – ala NY Times

This is a great article from the New York Times about the progression of the cycling movement in NYC.  (A noticeable point in the article:  of the 3 times that the author - a NYC cyclist – was involved in traffic incidents, the most physical damage he incurred came from a Ford van as he was walking across the street…)

One of the most interesting ideas from this particular piece is the presentation of the theory that a cyclist’s image defines their style of riding.  (This is done in an articulate and subtle way, but it does point out the exaggerated amount of stereotyping and prejudice in the media – even among fellow bikers!)  Will acting like saints justify our existence?  YES, we have duties and obligations as cyclists and as active members in traffic:  NO, you are not a bad person if you choose not to obey the rules of the road;  HOWEVER, when you risk your life, and especially if you endanger other people, you need to take full responsibility for your actions – no matter what style of clothes you wear, bike you ride, or hairdo you’re trying to rock.  ”Period, Dot.”
